Doris Marie Leeper, an acclaimed sculptor, painter, and environmentalist, was known for her large-scale commissions and works in over 100 public collections. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, she earned an art history degree from Duke University in 1951 and became a full-time artist in 1961 after moving to Eldora, Florida. There, she became a passionate advocate for environmental preservation, playing a key role in the establishment of the 58,000-acre Canaveral National Seashore in 1975. Leeper also championed art education and emerging artists, founding the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 1982, now a world-renowned artists' community. She later helped create the Alliance of Artists' Communities to support residency programs nationwide. Following her death in April 2000, the Doris Leeper Endowment and Award for Excellence in Art Education were established in her honor.
