- Lot Description
Chinese Martaban Ceramic Jar. Magnificent clouds and dragons grace the surface. Small cartouche with kanji on it near the top.
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Size: 10 x 8 1/4 in.
A Chinese Martaban jar is a large stoneware storage vessel named after the Myanmar port of Martaban (modern day Mottama, Burma), which first emerged during the Ming Dynasty for keeping food, water, and other trade goods in during voyages between the two nations. The practice spread to all Southeast Asia countries, similar to the Tapayan in the Oceanic islands, and were distinguished by their glazing and decoration, usually with dragon imagery. Today they are frequently sought out by collectors, sometimes garnering large sums as heirlooms and cultural symbols from centuries of Asian trade and prosperity.
