Dominique Vivant Denon (1747-1825) French, Etching on Paper. Signed within the plate.
Depicts a view of the remains from the side, as well as a top-down drawing below.
Condition: Commensurate with age.
Size: 15 1/4 x 22 1/5 x 1/2 in.
Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon (1747-1825), a French nobleman who preferred art to law, began his career in diplomatic service, first exploring portraiture and later gaining recognition for his etchings of ancient art in Naples. Saved from a death sentence during the Revolution by his friend Jacques-Louis David, he later joined Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798. Denon's 1802 publication of sketches from Egypt crowned his reputation as an archaeologist and artist, sparking the Egyptian Revival style and laying the foundations for modern Egyptology. He was subsequently appointed director-general of museums and head of the new Musée Napoléon (now the Louvre), a position he held until 1814.
