Gemini said Marie Dorothy Dolph (1884–1979), often signing her work as M.D. Dolph, was a celebrated American Western artist and one of the first commercially successful female painters in Wyoming. Born in Baraboo, Wisconsin, she studied under the legendary Alphonse Mucha at the Art Institute of Chicago before homesteading in Wyoming in 1913. Her prolific career, which spanned over seven decades, was defined by her vibrant oil paintings of the Teton Range, Yellowstone, and working ranches, as well as the desert landscapes of California. Known affectionately by her sons as the "Stump Painter" for her frequent inclusion of weathered trees, she gained national recognition in 1936 when she was selected for the National Exhibition of American Art at Rockefeller Center. Today, her legacy is preserved in significant collections, including the Wyoming State Museum and the Brinton Museum, where she is honored as a "State Treasure" for her role in capturing the rugged spirit of the American West.
