- Lot Description
Framed Chinese Qing Dynasty Embroidered Dragon and Phoenix Silk Change Purse. Purple background with delicately created figures. White placard underneath on black frame reads "Qing Dynasty Embroidered silk change purse (1644-1912) (Last imperial dynasty of China) Phoenix and Dragon motif." Under glass, label on frame says "Made in USA."
Condition: Some deterioration to purse. Commensurate with age.
Overall Size: 20 1/2 x 14 1/2 in.
Sight Size: 14 3/4 x 5 1/2 in.
During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the dragon and phoenix were prominent symbols of imperial power and marital harmony, frequently appearing together on art, porcelain, and other artifacts. The dragon symbolized the emperor, strength, and masculinity, while the phoenix represented the empress, grace, and femininity. Together, their pairing symbolized a powerful, auspicious union, embodying yin and yang, and was a common decorative motif to bring good fortune and prosperity.
