George R. Brill (1867-1918) American, 1916 Bronze Clad Kneeling Angel Sculpture. Signed and dated near base, indicating this was made in one of the final years of his life.

George Reiter Brill was born August 27th, 1867 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to German immigrants. Interested in art from an early age, he studied illustration and painting at the Spring Garden Institute in Pittsburgh, as well as sculpture and other mediums at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was a member of the fellowship of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, and became well-known regionally for his illustration as well as for writing songs and children’s books. His drawings were often featured in major northeastern newspapers, especially New York and Philadelphia newspapers, and he lived and worked for a time in Massachusetts as well. He was especially known for his poster art. His illustration subjects included crime, wickedness, and politics as well as more mundane matters. In the early 1910s, suffering from ill health, he relocated to Florida, where he died on March 6th, 1918 in Clearwater at just fifty-one years of age.
