Ian Tremewen was born in Montreal, Canada in 1954. He was surrounded by art from an early age, as both of his parents were artists who traveled extensively, primarily to Vancouver and Bermuda. He was encouraged but never forced to draw and paint, and began to gravitate to watercolors in his late teens. He attended Vancouver College where he obtained a dual major in fine art and architecture, and first focused on sculpture in ceramics and wood. In 1976 he moved to Maui, Hawaii after a trip there, and began annual exhibitions at the Village Gallery. He was inspired by the scenery and color and light of the tropical habitat to sculpt in glass, explore textiles, and finally returned to painting in watercolors to capture what he saw. He also began to experiment with themed series, seeing how many variations of a single subject or image he could create, often depicting rainforests, barns, and nautical scenes. In the early 2000s he relocated to Australia, where he continues to make art. He has won the S.O.S. Festival Gold Metal, the Art Maui Poster Award, and First Place at the Suncorp Biennial. His work is found in many public, private, and corporate collections, including permanent exhibitions at the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and Art, Stanford University, and the University of New South Wales.
