John Henry Dolph (1835-1903) American, Rural Genre Scene of Farm with Animals. Oil painting on board depicting a rustic farmyard scene with cattle and poultry near a large barn and haystack, housed in an ornate, gilded gesso frame with fluted details. Signed lower left. Gallery label verso. Framed.

Sight Size: 6 3/4 x 11 1/4 in.John Henry Dolph (1835-1903) was an American painter best known for his charming and highly detailed depictions of cats and kittens, which made him one of the most popular animal artists of the late 19th century. Born in New York, he initially worked as a carriage decorator before studying art in Europe, including in Paris and Antwerp, where he developed his refined technique. Dolph exhibited at major institutions such as the National Academy of Design and gained widespread acclaim for his ability to capture personality and emotion in animals, especially felines. His works were widely reproduced in prints, helping to cement his reputation and making his imagery familiar to a broad audience.
