Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist and master of ukiyo-e , a style he helped evolve from a focus on courtesans and actors to include landscapes, plants, and animals. Born into a family of artisans, he began his career as a woodcarver’s apprentice before joining the studio of Katsukawa Shunshō. Hokusai was known for his frequent name changes, each often marking a new artistic period, most commonly utilizing the nickname Gakyo-jin (meaning “man crazy about pictures”), indicating his oft-professed desire to depict every conceivable subject matter in any available style. His most famous series, “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” includes the iconic print “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” A prolific artist, he produced over 30,000 works in various mediums, including prints, paintings, and book illustrations. Hokusai's art had a significant influence on Western artists, such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet, during the 19th Century wave of Japonisme. He continued to work until his death at age 88, famously lamenting that he needed just a few more years to become a "real painter," solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest masters in art history.
