Marc Chagall (1887-1985), born Moishe Shagal, was a Russian-French artist and a founder of surrealism. Born in Vitebsk, Russia, he was first exposed to art through a schoolmate, later studying in St. Petersburg and returning to Vitebsk to become commissar for the arts. In 1910, he traveled to Paris, where he was exposed to different art movements like Cubism and Fauvism, and adopted his new name to fit in. He lived in a unique twelve-sided studio where he frequently exchanged ideas with other artists and quickly became known for his distinctive style. When the Nazis invaded France, his friend Varian Fry rescued him and his family from a Gestapo roundup, moving them to New York in 1941. Chagall's first wife, Bella, died of a viral infection in 1944. He returned to France in 1947, where he met Russian milliner Valentine Brodsky who became his muse for the rest of his life. Chagall worked in nearly every artistic medium, creating works from biblical etchings to stained-glass windows. He lived in Vence, France, until his death in 1985, leaving behind a vast body of work.
