- Lot Description
Rare Limited Edition English Royal Doulton 1936 Ceramic Charles Dickens Motto Jug. Incredibly detailed depiction of numerous characters from Dicken's catalogue of creations, signed by M. Fenton and Noke and bearing the names of the fictional folk around the very bottom. Above that is a motto: "Lord Keep My Memory Green." The handle has more writing at the top: "Dickens - Master of Smiles & Tears." An ornate head of Dickens forms the spout opposite the handle. On the underside is a picture of Dickens and part of the London skyline, along with the symbol of Royal Doulton and descriptive information about the piece, including listing it as number 490 of 1000 jugs made.
Size: 11 x 7 x 11 in.
Motto jugs, or "motto ware," are ceramic pieces decorated with wise, humorous, or inspirational sayings that first appeared in 19th-century England. The style reached its peak in popularity during the early 20th century in both England and the United States, with early pieces featuring simple stoneware and short sayings. Although the mainstream favored minimalism after the mid-20th century, certain elaborate examples from makers like Royal Doulton remain sought after by collectors, sustaining the tradition.
