- Lot Description
Robert Daughters (1929-2013) American, Southwestern Landscape Serigraph. Depicts the stunning Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, New Mexico with the light of the sunset creating stunning shadows and highlights in the colors of the desert scenery. Signed in charcoal bottom right. Numbered in charcoal 39/255 bottom middle.
Overall Size: 27 1/2 x 37 in.
Sight Size: 14 x 23 3/4 in.
Robert Daughters was born in 1929 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and spent three years in the United States Military after high school. After his discharge he worked as a Curator of Display at the St. Joseph Museum of Natural History while attending the Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design on the GI Bill, and in 1953 he visited Taos, New Mexico, where he was immediately drawn to painting the light and colors of the region. While working at an advertising art studio in Kansas City he took yearly trips to New Mexico, finally moving his family there in 1970 and eventually settling in the O.E.Berninghaus Home and studio in Taos, becoming one of the most represented painters of landscapes and Pueblo scenes as part of the “Taos Six.” He won numerous awards from the National Society of Art Directors, the Artist Guide, paper companies and other organizations for his both his realistic and stylized works in color and charcoal, including the Best of Show Award, the Governor's Purchase Award, and the Merit Award at the New Mexico State Fair Show in 1972 as well as participated in one-man, group, and international exhibition shows over the next thirty years. He passed away on October 24th, 2013, and his works continue to be exhibited and sold through many galleries in the Southwest as well as found in museums and private collections around the globe.
