This is a used ticket stub to get into Fenway Park for Ted Williams' last game as a major league baseball player, and it's noteworthy because Ted Williams hit a home run in his last at-bat of the game, a great way to finish off a remarkable career.
The ticket stub is dated Sept. 28, 1960, which is the last day of William's career as a ball player, it cost only two dollars to get into the grandstands for the game, and it is hard to pass up a Ted Williams memento like this. Williams had three more game to play after this one to end the season, but the Red Sox were out of the pennant race and he felt there was nothing to top his home run in his final at-bat, so he sat out the last three games and ended his career on a high note.
Ted Williams (1918-2002) was an American League professional baseball player and manager who played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history - he was the last player to hit over.400 in a season besides Josh Gibson, who hit over 400 during the 1943 season of the National Negro League.
Williams was a nineteen-time All-Star, a two-time recipient of the AL's Most Valuable Player Award, a six-time AL batting champion, and a two-time Triple Crown winner. He finished his playing career with 521 home runs and a 1.116 on-base plus slugging percentage, the third highest of all time. He hit.406 during the 1941 baseball season and his career batting average of .344 ranks 11th all-time, and his stats probably would have been out of sight if he hadn't enlisted in the Marines during World War II and the Korean War.
The ticket measures 3 x 1 1/2 inches wide and is in very good condition, and Fenway Park could only hold 33,368 seats in 1960; we also found out that September 28, 1960 was a cold overcast day in Boston and just a little over 10,000 fans were in the stands to watch Willams hit his historic home run in the last at-bat of his career, so this is a rare ticket to get into Fenway to watch one of the great ball players of all-time. In 2024, Leland's sold another ticket from the game for over $1300, and we are starting the bidding low to get things going.
Size: 1 1/2 x 3 in.
