- Lot Description
Traditional Buddhist Bronze Temple Bell. Dark-patinated bronze temple-style bell featuring low-relief dragon and phoenix motifs, suspended from an ornate dragon-form stand with a matching striker on a lotus-style base.
Size: 4 x 4 x 12 in.
uddhist temple bells, known as bonshō in Japan or kyonggo in Korea, serve as profound spiritual anchors that bridge the gap between the mundane and the divine. Unlike Western bells that swing and use internal clappers, these massive bronze instruments are stationary and struck externally with a suspended wooden beam, producing a deep, low-frequency resonance that can vibrate for several minutes. This lingering sound is symbolically tied to the concept of impermanence; as the toll gradually fades into silence, it reminds practitioners of the fleeting nature of existence. Traditionally rung to mark the passage of time or to signal the start of meditation, the bell’s strike is also believed to offer temporary relief to beings in the underworld and to cleanse the mind of worldly distractions, inviting a moment of absolute presence and peace.
