- Lot Description
Virginia Metalcrafters 1997 Copper and Cast Metal Armillary Sphere Sundial. Zodiac globe with angels supporting it in an iconic blend of classical and art deco styles. Label on underside with company and date of 1997.
Condition: Significant weathering, commensurate with age.
Size: 20 x 13 x 19 1/2 in.
Virginia Metalcrafters had its beginnings with the founding of the Waynesboro Stove Company in 1890 by William J. Loth. The company, which made ornately cast cookstoves, heaters, and all accouterments for kitchens of the period, later developed the electric Hotpoint Range. It merged with the Riffe Ram Pump Works in 1904, and in 1938 the Rife-Loth Corporation began selling finely crafted brass accessories under the name Virginia Metalcrafters. In 2015 the Virginia Metalcrafters building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. VM Acquisitions bought the company name and old facilities in 2020, and began the process of building back the devastated Waynesboro community from economic collapse by turning it into the focal point of a thriving marketplace.
