Wallace Sterling Silver Plate - 5.975 ozt. Marked on underside.
Size: 1/2 x 9 in.
Weight: 5.975 ozt.
In 1855 Robert Wallace (1815-1892), the son of Scottish immigrant silversmiths, founded R. Wallace & Co. in Wallingford, Connecticut. Having apprenticed for the Meriden Britannia Company, he sought to develop his own brand, first focusing only on spoons. In 1870 he took full control of the company and renamed it R. Wallace & Sons in partnership with his sons Robert and William. In 1875 his other sons created the Wallace Brothers, a division in the company that focused on silverplate, but it ceased production in 1879 and was absorbed back into the main company. By the time Wallace died his company had roughly 600 employees, and his children went on to run it until it was combined with the Watson Company and renamed Wallace Silversmiths in 1956. They were in turn purchased by the Hamilton Watch Company in 1959, became a division of H.M.W. Industry in 1971, and eventually were sold to Syratech Corporation in 1986, who ended up as part of Lifetime Brands in 2006. Many of their early pieces have wound up in American museums, and Lifetime Brands continues to produce their sterling, silverplate, and stainless steel flatware to this day.
