Offered here is one of the earliest known Kobe Bryant autographs as a Los Angeles Laker, fresh to the hobby and just recently slabbed by PSA/DNA. It was obtained by a fan attending the 1996 Fila Summer Pro League where Kobe made his pro debut before the NBA preseason of Kobe's rookie year.
The 1996 NBA Draft featured arguably the greatest group of talent to enter the league at the same time, including future Hall of Famers Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen and Steve Nash. Kobe commanded quite a bit of buzz after he was drafted 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets and then traded to the Lakers. Joining the NBA directly out of high school opened him up to criticism, but also created an aura around his name and potential.
The start of Kobe's legendary career began at The Pyramid, home of the Long Beach State University 49ers, where the Lakers played their first Summer League game on Saturday, July 13, 1996. Less than 5,000 were in attendance to witness Kobe score 27 points in his official pro debut. Kobe sat out the next game three days later but was on the bench cheering on his teammates. Understandably, he was more accessible for autographs.
One fan who attended that Tuesday, July 16th Summer League contest had Kobe sign his full name and jersey number, "Kobe Bryant #8", on this folded page in bold blue ballpoint ink. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the early Kobe autograph and graded it MINT 9. On the back of the page, the fan jotted down the date of the game for reference. That fan's 7/16/1996 ticket stub was also saved and has been graded PSA GD 2. It is the only graded ticket in PSA's pop report, serving as a nice memento to help authenticate this incredibly early Kobe autograph.
