Hard to imagine a player whose path to the Majors had more obstacles than Yasiel Puig. The Cuban import signed with the L.A. Dodgers in 2012 for $42 million after a treacherous journey from his homeland – his 13th attempt to defect by boat – involving Mexican drug cartels and a secret island safe house with more plot twists than a Michael Mann thriller. On June 2, 2013, the talented five-tool outfielder debuted in the Big Leagues and made an instant splash. In his first seven games with the Dodgers, Puig went 13-for-29 (.464) with 4 home runs and 10 RBI to win National League Player of the Week honors. He finished his rookie season as NL ROY runner-up, batting .319 with 19 homers in 104 games and helping the Dodgers win the NL West. He followed it up with an outstanding sophomore campaign in which he was voted as the National League's starting right fielder in the 2014 All-Star Game.
Featured here is a bat Puig swung in 2014 for the Dodgers during a rivalry game against the San Francisco Giants. On July 14th at AT&T Park, facing Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong, Yasiel splintered this bat on a groundout to second. The moment is easily photo-matched to two timely images (Getty 452789762 and 452789858) and the broken bat has been documented by MLB Authentication in their database. Puig went 1-for-5 in the game with a run scored as the Dodgers won it, 5-0, thanks to a complete-game shutout from Clayton Kershaw.
The black-painted Marucci professional model bat comes with white tape holding the cracked section together. (This is how the bat was received by MLB.) The barrel has several ball contacts marks and noticeable grain checking from heavy usage. There is a light coat of pine tar on the upper handle. “Handcrafted For Yasiel Puig” and "00 Custom Cut - A" is stamped on the barrel. Stamped on the knob end is the "07/10/14" manufacturing date, "4" (34" length) and "1o" (31 oz.) along with Puig's jersey number "66" in white. MLB Authentication hologram sticker (EK 894833) is affixed to barrel.
“Wild Horse” – as Vin Scully so eloquently dubbed him – will always be remembered for his brash style, spectacular "Sportscenter" highlights, and the excitement he brought to the ballpark. Puig sold out road games as opposing fans came out just to get a glimpse of El Caballo Loco in the flesh. Dodger fans will never forget his three-run homer in Game 4 of the 2018 World Series that gave L.A. a 4-0 lead over the Red Sox and seemingly swung momentum in the series. As it turned out, that was Puig's last highlight as a Dodger. His off-the-field issues have left us all wondering what might have been.
