Hard to imagine a player whose path to the Majors had more obstacles than Yasiel Puig. The Cuban import signed with the Dodgers in 2012 for $42 million after a treacherous journey from his homeland – his 13th attempt to defect by boat – involving Mexican drug cartels and a secret island safe house with more plot twists than a Michael Mann thriller. On June 2, 2013, the talented five-tool outfielder debuted in the Big Leagues and made an instant splash. In his first seven games with the Dodgers, Puig went 13-for-29 (.464) with 4 home runs and 10 RBI to win National League Player of the Week honors. He finished his rookie season as NL ROY runner-up, batting .319 with 19 homers in 104 games and helping the Dodgers win the NL West.
Presented here is Yasiel Puig’s game-worn 2013 road jersey from a pivotal series at Chase Field in late September of his rookie campaign. On September 19, 2013, the Dodgers clinched the NL West Division title with a 7-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. It marked their first trip to the playoffs since 2009. Puig was quiet at the plate but made a couple dazzling plays in right, and then was the ringleader in a memorable post-game celebration. After a shirtless worm dance in the visiting clubhouse that got thousands of hits social media, Puig and his crew of Budweiser-soaked teammates ran back onto the field where they jumped the right-field fence straight into the Chase Field pool. The notorious pool party was not well-received by the D-Backs organization who called it "classless".
This rookie playoff-clinching jersey comes with seal-proof documentation from MLB Authentication and a conclusive photo-match from ResMatch (Getty 181221097). It remains unwashed since the celebration and comes with two buttons missing – probably lost during the post-game melee The size 50 gray mesh shirt is properly tagged by Majestic on the left front tail with an additional “66 Puig 50 2013” label on a strip tag behind the collar. The classic road “Los Angeles” cursive logo is sewn across the chest with “PUIG” and his No. “66” on the reverse – all in blue tackle twill. His number on the front is done in red tackle twill. The shirt exhibits solid wear with an aroma of sweat and perhaps a hint of Bud. Includes Resolution Photomatching paperwork and MLB Authentication hologram (EK 022434).
“Wild Horse” – as Vin Scully so eloquently dubbed him – will always be remembered for his brash style, spectacular "Sportscenter" highlights, and the excitement he brought to the ballpark. Puig was the National League's starting right fielder at the 2014 All-Star Game. He sold out road games as opposing fans came out just to get a glimpse of El Caballo Loco in the flesh. Dodger fans will never forget his three-run homer in Game 4 of the 2018 World Series that gave L.A. a 4-0 lead over the Red Sox and seemed to swing momentum in the series. But that was Puig's last highlight as a Dodger. His off-the-field issues have left us all wondering what might have been.
