Hard to imagine a player whose path to the Majors had more obstacles than Yasiel Puig. The Cuban import signed with the Dodgers in 2012 for $42 million after a treacherous journey from his homeland – his 13th attempt to defect by boat – involving Mexican drug cartels and a secret island safe house with more plot twists than a Michael Mann thriller. On June 2, 2013, the talented five-tool outfielder debuted in the Big Leagues and made an instant splash. In his first seven games with the Dodgers, Puig went 13-for-29 (.464) with 4 home runs and 10 RBI to win National League Player of the Week honors. He finished his rookie season as NL ROY runner-up, batting .319 with 19 homers in 104 games and helping the Dodgers win the NL West.
Featured here is the bat Puig swung to hit career home run #14 during his rookie campaign, and it was an important one. On September 1, 2013, with the Dodgers and Padres tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 6th, Puig launched the first pitch he saw into the left-center field bleachers. He went 2-for-4 that day and his solo shot turned out to be the game-winner as L.A. held on for the 2-1 victory behind Zack Greinke. What’s more, Puig did it on “Cuban Heritage Day” at Dodgers Stadium as Vin Scully referenced in this memorable home run call. The bat has been conclusively photo-matched (Getty 179434361) to the 9/1/13 home run by ResMatch. Further documentation from MLB Authentication explains that Puig cracked it the following game (9/2/13) against the Rockies in Colorado.
“Wild Horse” – as Vin Scully so eloquently dubbed him – will always be remembered for his brash style, spectacular "Sportscenter" highlights, and the excitement he brought to the ballpark. Puig was the National League's starting right fielder at the 2014 All-Star Game. He sold out road games as opposing fans came out just to get a glimpse of El Caballo Loco in the flesh. Dodger fans will never forget his three-run homer in Game 4 of the 2018 World Series that gave L.A. a 4-0 lead over the Red Sox and seemed to change the momentum of the series. But that was Puig's last highlight as a Dodger. His off-the-field issues have left us all wondering what might have been.
The two-toned Old Hickory professional model bat (34.5” and 34-oz.) shows outstanding use with ball marks and stitch impressions throughout the barrel as well as a moderate coat of pine tar. The handle is blue from the pine tag capturing some color from Puig’s batting gloves. A piece of black protective medical tape covers the handle crack (this is how the bat was received by MLB). The barrel is labeled “34.5 PRO MAPLE YP66” and LDMX-1307570-YP1” with his name below. A blue Dodgers sticker with Puig’s No. 66 in red is affixed to the knob. Includes full paperwork from Resolution Photomatching and a hologram sticker from MLB Auth. (EK 816887).
