Note: These vases are derived from the celebrated model for vases-cloches created by the marchand-mercier Jean Dulac. Often incorporating pop-up candelabra and with bodies in the form of Sevres porcelain, the model achieved great popularity among sophisticated collectors of the 1770's. A pair signed Dulac was delivered to the king of Poland for his use at Lazienski Palace, Warsaw (illustrated in P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dores Francais du XVIIIe Siecle, Paris, 1987, pp. 72-3, figs. 66-7. While another pair from the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondeley was sold Christie's London, December 8, 1994, lot 83.
Both in good overall condition, with scattered rubbing and wear to the ormolu mounts. Scattered small scuffs and very minor wear to the patinated bronze. Handsome models, ready to place.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
Sold Christie’s, New York, September 25, 1997, Lot 406.
The Collection of Carole Harris.
