Robert James (1947-1992), a woven baleen basket by Robert James, featuring a carved finial in the form of a polar bear head with inlaid baleen eyes and stylized teeth. The body and lid are tightly coiled from narrow strips of dark baleen. Signed on the interior of the basket "Robert James, Wainwright, Alaska." Ht. 4, dia. 4 in. Robert James (1947-1992): Awards: Festival of Alaska Native Arts, first prize for ivory and juror's choice award (1976). Carrer: Alaska State Council on the Arts Chair (1979-82), State of Alaska, Member of Native Cultural steering committee (1981-82), University of Alaska Visiting Professor (1981). Exhibitions: Anchorage Museum of History and Art, American Indian Contemporary Arts San Francisco, Yellowstone Arts Center. Permanent collections: Alaska State Museum, Yukon Baha'i Institute, City of Seattle, Heard Museum, Washington State Portable Art Collection.
