Nepal, 12th-13th century, a rare and refined fragment of a four headed linga (Caturmukhalinga) carved in grey schist. It depicts each of the four faces of Shiva's manifestations with a pair of hands (unique to Nepalese sculpture), one holding a rosary, the other a holy water pot. Shiva's wrathful aspect, Bhairava faces south, while Vamadeva, which is depicted as half male (Shiva) and half female (Uma) faces north. Mounted on a custom base. Some chips and wear, but otherwise fine condition, as shown. Slightly loose on base. Ht. 6 5/8, dia. 8 1/2 in., 10 ¾ in. high on base.
