- Lot Description
This finely cast Luristan Near Eastern Ancient Persian Bronze Sword originates from the Luristan region of ancient western Iran and dates to the late second to early first millennium B.C., approximately 10th–6th century B.C. It is a superb example of Iron Age Persian metallurgy, forged in copper alloy with a sharply tapered, double-edged blade and a full-length central ridge running from tang to tip.
The sword measures 18.5 inches in total length and retains its elegant proportions despite the loss of the original handle, which would have once been crafted in wood, bone, or ivory and secured with rivets to the exposed tang.
The Luristan culture—situated in the Zagros Mountains—was renowned for its bronze-casting expertise, particularly in the creation of weaponry and ceremonial items. Swords such as this were not only practical instruments of war but also held ceremonial or symbolic value, often buried with elite warriors or used in ritual contexts. The long, leaf-like profile and tang construction represent a transition between earlier socketed weapons and later iron-forged forms, embodying a key phase in the evolution of Near Eastern arms.
Comparable examples can be found in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the British Museum, where the enduring legacy of Luristan bronze craftsmanship is preserved and studied. This piece is remarkably well-preserved, with a richly aged green patina and subtle surface encrustation that speak to its age and authenticity.
