Mike Etie is a landscape painter whose principal medium is soft pastel, using pure pigment on cotton paper or sanded Masonite to capture the dramatic effects of light and brilliant color across the rugged landscapes of the Southwest and Texas Hill Country. His most significant mentor and teacher was Santa Fe pastel master Albert Handell, and he also studied with Daniel Greene, Lorenzo Chavez, Eric Michaels, Gil Dillinger, and Gordon Fowler. Etie’s approach combines plein-air observation with larger studio works, emphasizing the way light transforms the landscape and evokes an emotional response; he has painted extensively throughout the Four Corners region and around Austin, Texas, while also producing large commissioned works. His practice is distinguished by vivid color, strong light effects, and a sensitivity to the atmosphere and emotional character of the outdoor landscape.
