A very rare and unusual Union case with original daguerreotype image within, produced c. 1855 with an original daguerreotype by Samuel Broadbent, American Victorian daguerreotypist and photographer whose work can be found in collections including at the Getty Museum. The elaborate exterior has motifs of scrolls and stylized floral designs. The interior has a burgundy velvet interior panel facing the daguerreotype, which is presented in a gilt metal frame with profuse floral decoration and is stamped S BROADBENT. The case interior is pencil signed and dated AUGUST 1856. Metal locking clasp. Missing hinges. Wear to case.
