Watchmaking in American history has been characterized by odd characters such as Edward Howard. With a passion for precision, Howard immediately envisioned establishing a major watchmaking firm that could take the lead in an extremely promising industry. A prestigious name in American horology, Edward Howard founded the Howard Watch Company following the closure of the Boston Watch Company. He wanted to create high-quality timepieces, including Howard pocket watches with interchangeable parts made by machines. The Howard Watch Company revamped the machinery for Howard's design in the first year of their operation and completed all the Boston Watch Company movements.
Industrial watch manufacturing advanced dramatically under Howard's leadership. During the early 20th century, the company could offer movements with all six positions adjusted. From then on, Edward Howard replaced Howard Watch & Co. on the dials. As a maker of fine clocks, Howard created 123,700 pocket watches during its 45 years of pioneering design and production, including many large watches. During the 1900s and 1930s, Howard was recognized as the most prestigious American maker of high-quality pocket watches.
Watch manufacturing by E. Howard & Co. began in 1858 in Boston, Massachusetts, and continued through 1902. Early Howard watches were noted for their high-quality watches, unique movement sizing system, and advanced watchmaking techniques, inscribed with E. Howard & Co. There were three main characteristics of Howard pocket watches - originality, innovative technology, and unique size. Gold and silver are the most common metals used to make these watches. Metal casings with gold plating are only found in the late Keystone productions. Within the next few decades, several American watch factories acquired and resold the last movements, designs, and names of the E. Howard Watch Company.
Around 1902, Keystone Watch Case Company bought the Edward Howard name, and all Howard watches from that era went under the name E. Howard Watch Co. pocket watches. These Howard pocket watches were produced and marketed as Keystone Howard pocket watches. Yet the original company's successors continue to produce the products of the same high quality. Then, Howard replaced any other references on the dial with Edward Howard Watch Co. on the movements.
Watches under the Howard brand ceased to be manufactured by Keystone Watch Case Co. in 1930. Aside from their impeccable quality movements, the 21 and 23 jeweled chronometers are impressive timepieces featuring angled and rhodium-plated surfaces that showcase the watchmaker's expertise. Caliber diameters were identified by different letters from the manufacturer.
