George Mathis was born in Seattle Washington in 1909 and majored in art at Washington State University, where he studied under William McDermitt. After graduating, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and worked as a commercial artist. He eventually relocated to Gold Rush country in 1948 and lived in Nevada city. He is best known for his drawings and paintings of the mother load region.
