**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque culture, ca. 500 CE. A lovely terracotta figural ocarina, presenting open palms and arms stretched downward to the sides. The hands have strong traces of the red pigmentation, and incised lines on the wrists indicate bracelets. Other jewelry adorns the body; two necklaces, spool earrings, and a large nose piercing. The stylized visage is composed of semicircular eyes with relief lids, a prominent nose above narrow lips, and a protruding disc, likely a labret piercing. Above the rounded brow is an enormous headdress with lateral panels that drape to the shoulders with incised lines indicating cloth folds. A circular opening on the back of the headdress forms the blow hole for the ocarina instrument. An incredibly detailed bust that beautifully delineates a figure of aristocracy or religious authority. Size: 5.75" W x 8.75" H (14.6 cm x 22.2 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
