Native American, Midwestern to Southern United States, including Ohio; Canada, Elgin County Ontario, Eastern Woodland and Mississippian culture, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. An intriguing collection of stone pieces known as cones, due to their shape. The largest is a mottled gray and beige stone with a flat, circular base and a rounded top, which may have been cone shaped originally. Two other stones are similar to the largest, with the same mottled hue with slightly conical tops. Next is a polished mahogany colored stone, possibly hematite, with the same cone shape. Another hematite stone has an elongated profile with a rounded top. The smallest, shaped like a hockey puck, is made from a mottled black stone with a polished surface. The true purpose of such stones is unknown, but similar pieces have been found across the eastern part of North America. This collection features a great variety of shapes as well as types of stones! Size of largest: 2" W x 1" H (5.1 cm x 2.5 cm); smallest: 1.125" W x .5" H (2.9 cm x 1.3 cm)
