A small modeled figure of a standing hippopotamus in turquoise-glazed faience, depicted with characteristic blocky body, blunt muzzle, small pricked ears, and short stump legs, the head turned slightly with deeply set eye depressions and an incised mouth. The granular surface retains pockets of bright turquoise-blue glaze in the recessed and protected areas, the upper surfaces weathered to a paler, sugary appearance characteristic of degraded Egyptian faience. After the celebrated Middle Kingdom tomb hippopotami (Dynasty XII, c. 1981–1802 BCE), the form best known from the example nicknamed "William" in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
