- Lot Description
Palatial framed Continental School oil on canvas painting, Village River Landscape with Sheep and Shepherds, apparently unsigned, relined, vertical seams to canvas, sight: approx 89"h, 71"w, overall: approx 93"h, 75"w, 75lbs **Provenance: This painting is part of a four-panel set offered as three separate lots in this auction. Previously owned by a fifth-generation Italian industrialist, who displayed the set in his 17th-century villa in Vicenza, Italy, before bringing it to Texas in the early 1980s.**

4.14.26- **Please note this is one of four works in this auction offered as three separate lots, which may be assembled to form a continuous pastoral scene, though each panel may also be displayed independently** In my opinion regarding LOT: I am not an expert on such works, a UV light examination reveals an old varnish layer across the surface, the canvas has been stabilized through relining, several vertical seams run the length of the composition which may indicate how the original canvas was constructed from joined sections, I am unsure, the painted surface is with craquelure throughout, there are scattered areas of inpainting with a more concentrated region observed from the lower left extending toward the central portion of the composition, please see images for reference, there are some possible small stabilized repairs, scattered paint flakes, minor blemishes, and light abrasions, along with areas of light surface grime and mild discoloration consistent with age, please refer to the online images for a view of the rear canvas, the frame appears stable and structurally sound, exhibiting typical overall small losses to the decorative trim and molding, mellowing and gilt loss with exposed gesso, all observed wear appearing consistent with age and display
