Lars Hansson Barmen was born in Barmen, Selje, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway in 1797, with his given occupation as a fisherman, and death recorded as circa 1884. Barmen is a historic island, and village, located at the mouth of the Nordfjord. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a fishing and boatbuilding society, with many inhabitants later emigrating (especially to the U.S. and Canada). The use of the name Barmen as a surname reflects the practice of rural communities adopting place names as surnames.
This bowl subsequently was held in the collections of Tom and Ann Cousins, the former whose company transformed the Atlanta skyline during the last quarter of the 20th C.
