This print is not important because its original painting was attributed to Rembrandt, but because it was done by master mezzotint artist S. Arlent Edwards, a transplant from England to the United States who revived the art of color mezzotint printmaking, a process described by an article by Charles Marvin Fairchild Memorial Gallery as painstaking and unforgiving.
This subject, sometimes known as Rembrandt's Mother, was published in an edition of 135, make it rather rare. Given the associations with Rembrandt and Edwards, and as a signed work, we believe that this print is one worth owning, even with its condition issues.
Framed beautifully in walnut and glazed. Inscription and signed in pencil by S. Arlent Edwards.
