Hagerstown, Maryland, silk on silk with ink or watercolor, imagery of a house, animals, insects, boats, and possibly a self portrait, reads "Sally Cake is my/name America is my Nation/Hagarstown [sic] is my Dwelling place/and Christ is my salvation/finished this September 17 1801", sight approx. 9-1/2 x 7-3/4 in.; tiger maple frame 14-1/4 x 12-3/4 x 1/2 in.
Provenance: Collection of Dr. George and Connie Manger
Note: Likely wrought by Sarah Cake (1793-1880) born in Hagerstown, Maryland. She married Henry Missel Reed Walling in Washington County Maryland in 1788. They had one child, George Walling. Sarah died on December 10th, 1880 in Jefferson, Kentucky. Another later sampler by Sarah Carver from Hagerstown, Maryland is listed in the MESDA Object Database (NN-2628). Text accompanying the sampler by Carver quotes Gloria Seaman Allen's book A Maryland Sampling: Girlhood Embroidery 1738-1860, which notes “The fact that there are so few samplers from western Maryland makes this Carver sampler a true rarity."
