Saddle re-built on a Federal Grimsley tree, retaining remnants of the original rawhide, now covered with faded blue-gray canvas. Pommel and cantle have formed brass trim and plain shields, Confederate iron strap staples and hand forged stirrup strap loops. Complete with wood stirrups, leather covers with cut-outs for the boot toe. The Confederate artillery officially changed from the Jenifer to the Grimsley saddle in 1863. A rare surviving example of a late war confederate saddle.
Provenance: John Ashworth Collection
Fair. Canvas very faded with some loose stitching, metal with heavy patina, crazing on the finish of the harness leather. Heavy wear and loss on the stirrup straps.
