SOUTHERN AMERICAN COFFIN‑HILT “BOWIE” KNIFE WITH D‑GUARD
Southern United States, circa 1840–1865.
A classic example of the Southern fighting knife, this piece features a broad single-edged blade with a short ricasso and tapered point, a full tang mounting coffin-shaped pale bone grip scales secured by three iron pins, and a forged strap-iron D-guard that forms a knuckle-bow from the pommel to a down-turned forward quillon.
The blacksmith‑forged blade and strap‑iron guard, together with the bone scales and simple pin construction, suggest small‑shop manufacture for the Southern/Western market rather than a factory product.
