Confederate States "Roman Sword" Navy cutlass. [Richmond, Virginia: Burger & Bros., ca 1861-1862]. Blade 18 in. Overall 23 1/2 in. long.
Spear-point, wasp-waisted double-edged blade. Hand-cast, ribbed brass grip, cross-guard quillons ornamented “C” and “S” on both sides. An example with the same hilt is illustrated in a discussion of Burger and Brothers by Shannon Pritchard in Collecting the Confederacy. (pp. 154-155).
Burger & Brothers was a firm founded after the Confederacy's establishment in the summer of 1861, receiving payments from the Confederate Treasury Department as early as July 4th.
On 12 November 1861, Burger delivered 63 "Roman Swords" to the Confederate Ordnance Department, and another 300 "Artillery Knives" on the 25th, and another 200 Artillery Knives on December 10th. Pritchard notes that "almost certainly, the terms 'Roman Swords' and 'Artillery knives' were used interchangeably." (p. 154). Although they only manufactured the blades for 5 months, they produced an output of 1,066 artillery swords.
