UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS REUNION, MARIANNA, FLORIDA — PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH BY W. L. EDDY, 1927
Gelatin silver panoramic print, titled in the negative “U.C.V. Reunion / Marianna – Florida.” and dated “Sept. 26–27–28–29, 1927.” at lower margin; signed in the negative “Photo by W. L. Eddy.” Long horizontal format, visible 39 2/8 x 7 1/2 in., archivally matted and framed to 41 1/4 x 9 1/8 in., (not examined out of frame).
A sweeping street-wide portrait recording a local gathering of the United Confederate Veterans three decades after the close of the Civil War. Veterans, many wearing reunion badges, stand with civilians and a uniformed band beneath flags and temporary decorations. Taken by regional photographer W. L. Eddy, the view is richly detailed across the full span of the print, providing a valuable visual document of Southern commemorative culture in the interwar period.
Large-format panoramic reunion photographs survive far less often than cabinet-card portraits of the era. This strong, clearly titled example, identifying place, dates, and maker, offers significant research interest for scholars of Civil War memory, veterans’ organizations, Florida local history, and American photographic practice of the 1920s.
