Ninth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. [North Carolina], 1861-1862. Half leatherette case. Tinting to cheeks.
A compelling portrait of a young Confederate soldier brandishing a revolver and a fearsome D-guard bowie knife. According to the consignor, it was related from the previous owner that the sitter is Jonathan Moretz of Company D, 1st North Carolina Cavalry.
Moretz was born in either 1842 or 1843 in Watauga County, North Carolina, and enlisted there as a private at the age of eighteen on 11 May 1861, mustering into Company D the same day. His military career was interrupted when he was captured at Willis Church, Virginia, on 29 June 1862. Although the place of his confinement remains unclear, records show that he was exchanged at Aiken’s Landing, Virginia, on 5 August 1862.
After the war, Moretz returned to Watauga County, where he married Mary in 1869. Together, they had twelve children. He lived until 1926, dying at the age of eighty-three.
Moretz appears every bit the young Southern fighting man in his portrait, his hands positively loaded with heavy weapons. His uniform looks to be of the homespun variety, with a thick welt of lighter contrasting fabric along the collar and seam of his dark jacket. The Bowie knife is particularly impressive, with a wide, beveled wood grip that suggests local manufacture. This is a classic and impressive Confederate soldier portrait that would be a highlight of any early photography collection.
