M1850 staff and field officer's sword. [Newark, New Jersey: Henry Sauerbier, n.d.] Overall approx. 38 7/8 in., blade approx. 30 7/8 in. long.
Though unmarked, this sword is certainly a product of Henry Sauerbier, considering the signature fuller, grip, pommel cap and spinner nut. It is complete in a metal scabbard denoting this as a mounted infantry officer's as opposed to the foot officers' leather scabbarded swords. The scabbard is fitted with acorn mounts and a scarce acorn drag.
The blade is acid-etched with a pair of stands of drums, cannons, and flags topped by American flag banners, a sheaf of arrows radiating from a central point, foliates, and an oval of 12 stars around a larger 13th with 6 points to the obverse and a depiction of a woman, possibly the personification of hope, with an anchor in one hand and a bundle of arrows, again radiating from one point, in the other, another oval of 12 stars around a larger 13th 6-pointed star, foliates, a large "US," and a masonic square and compass with the letter "G" to the reverse. The etchings are in the usual Sauerbier style.
The blade is overall clean, with a pleasing, grey patina, while the brass hilt elements have taken on a dark brown patina. The leather grip is in fair condition and the triple strand wire wrap with the central strand twisted is completely intact. The leather washer is absent but the blade is tight nonetheless.
