Non-regulation Civil War foot officer's sword with a scarcely-seen "eagle medallion" steel guard. [Solingen, Germany]: N.p., n.d. Overall approx. 38 5/8 in., blade approx. 32 3/4 in. long.
The medallion to the guard is delicately engraved with a Federal eagle holding a clearly legible "E. Plurjbus Unum" ribband in its beak. The blade features a brass "PROVED" disc to its ricasso and acid etchings, lightened with age, of foliates and stands of arms to each side, a Federal eagle and "E. Pluribus Unum" ribband to the obverse, and a large "U.S." to the reverse.
Both Union and altered Confederate examples of swords with eagle medallion guards are known, albeit fairly scarce. The hilt is unquestionably patterned after the British swords of the day, including the p1827 rifle officer's sword and patterns 1822 and 1845 cavalry and infantry officers' sabers, though this piece would evidently not have met their regulations either. As a result, this uniquely American style of sword is distinct from its contemporaries.
Complete in scabbard with a crudely cross-sectioned drag suggesting it saw service. The blade exhibits subtle salt and pepper pitting overall and takes on a dark patina towards the tip and immediately around the washer. The shagreen grip with 7 wraps of triple-strand copper wire, the exterior strands twisted and the central strand Dragoon style, is in very fine condition, and steel hilt elements display a dark, warm patina consistent with the scabbard but remain crisp in their embellishments. The original leather washer is present.
