The Purnell Legion was a Union unit from Maryland formed in 1861 and named for Colonel Benjamin Purnell, notable for combining infantry, cavalry, and artillery within a single legion. Rather than fighting as a unified force at major battles like the Battle of Gettysburg, its most important service came in defending Maryland—especially Baltimore—and protecting railroads, supply lines, and the Eastern Shore from Confederate raids. By helping secure this crucial border state for the Union, the legion played a strategically significant, if less famous, role in the Civil War before its components were later reorganized into separate units.
Company A was assigned to duty on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where it rendered effective service, and later carried out additional assignments in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The company is perhaps best known for its efforts in the campaign and battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, from July 1–3, 1863. It remained in service until being honorably mustered out on July 28, 1865.
