Leather bell-crown volunteer militia shako. circa 1830.
Tarred pressed leather with leather visor and brass scale chinstrap with star buttons. Black leather sweatband. Overall height 7 1/2 in. Crown diam. 10 in.
With die-struck brass Eagle-on-Shield cap plate, hand-cut from the central portion of a larger militia shield-shaped plate, circa 1825-1830. Evidently military suppliers created these more modest plates as an alternative from the oversize cap plates. (Campbell & O'Donnell, American Military Headgear Insignia, fig. 601-602).
Also with tooled leather stacked cockade, crown linked chain, and elongated white wool pompon.
