[John Carbutt, photographer]. 309. Pawnee Indians receiving their Gov't Annuity. Albumen stereoview with yellow cardstock mount. [Chicago, Illinois]: [J. Carbutt], n.d. View and series title "Views of the Rocky Mountains and Vicinity." printed to mount verso. Period ink inscription to verso reads "No. 344. Pickering [M.O.] alongside the view title.
An outdoor view showing three white "Indian Agents" seated around a makeshift table covered in a woven blanket. They are surrounded by 10 standing Pawnee figures, one wearing a top hat, and another a Hardee hat featuring U.S. Cavalry insignia. Four other Pawnee figures are seated on the high ground behind the main group. The foot of a mountain can be seen in the far distance.
Though uncredited on the mount, the image was taken by John Carbutt (1832-1905) and published in his popular "Views of the Rocky Mountains and Vicinity" stereoview series. In addition to his photographic practice, he was a pioneer of film and innovative photographic processes. He is best remembered as the official photographer for the Union Pacific Railroad, publishing a stereoview series Rail Road Excursion to the 100th Meridian.
The Pawnee historically lived in Nebraska and northern Kansas, but were forcibly removed to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in the 1870s. Even before the relocation, their numbers were decimated by infectious disease and prolonged conflict with Dakota, Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. Many Pawnee warriors enlisted with the United States Army to serve as Indian scouts, especially to fight their historic enemies. The figure wearing the cavalry hat may have been one of these scouts.
