Heads of the People: or, Portraits of the English' is a brilliant window into early Victorian society in England. The book has been illustrated by the famed British caricaturist and illustrator Kenny Meadows (1790-1874), and is filled with the poetry of many important British writers such as William Makepeace Thackeray
(1811-1863), Douglas Jerrold (1803-1857), and Leigh Hunt (1784-1859), among many others.
Each chapter of the book deals with a different profession in Victorian England, starting first with a portrait of a typical ,member of that profession and continuing with a poem detailing their place in society and the way society views them. Throughout the books are 80+ engraved illustrations of archetypal members of English society.
This 2 volume set was published in 1864 by Henry George Bohn of London.
