A finely crafted miniature silvered metal casket in Renaissance Revival style. The casket is rectangular with a flat, hinged lid. Each surface, including the top, sides, and front, is deeply ornamented with symmetrical floral and foliate motifs in relief, featuring cross-hatched backgrounds and raised borders. Mythical creatures, likely winged lions or chimeras, flanking a central axis on the front and possibly on the sides, referencing ancient or medieval bestiaries. Panel and strapwork decoration evocative of Italian Renaissance cassoni (marriage chests) or Gothic reliquaries. The lid lifts to reveal a plain, unlined interior with visible wooden walls, suggesting the silver is a decorative casing over a wooden core.
Continental European, possibly Italian or German Renaissance Revival.
Late 19th to early 20th century.5 3/4 x 4 x 2 3/4 in., (14.5 x 10.5 x 7 cm.)
Condition
Tarnish consistent with age, some areas of greenish oxidation (suggesting low-purity silver or contact with brass/wood). The relief work appears intact with no visible losses. The wooden liner shows age-related wear but no major damage.
