A fine example of a gentleman's or lady’s portable writing desk, this English writing slope is crafted from richly figured rosewood veneer and accented with ornate brass inlay, exemplifying the decorative tastes of the Victorian period, circa 1860–1880.
The rectangular case is hinged and sloped, designed for use on a tabletop or lap, and closes with a brass keyhole escutcheon to the front (key not shown). The top panel is inlaid with a central brass cartouche featuring neoclassical scrollwork and foliate motifs, possibly incorporating light enamel or colored lacquering within the brass channels. The lid’s inlay surrounds a shield-shaped reserve typically left blank for the owner’s monogram. A delicate stringing border and crossbanding in alternating woods or faux-ivory further emphasizes the rectangular frame. Brass hinges are inset and original to the piece, indicating skilled joinery and craftsmanship.
