- Lot Description
Cast in mixed metal, likely bronze or spelter with a dark patinated surface, this sculptural cane handle is finely modeled as the head of a hound, probably a pointer or hunting dog, shown in profile with an elongated muzzle, alert expression, and carefully rendered ears and fur. The eye is set with a small amber or amber-colored cabochon, lending a vivid accent and lifelike presence to the composition. The neck is formed as a tapering grip collar with stylized fur texture, terminating in a cylindrical socket for mounting onto a wooden cane shaft. The modeling and subject align with late 19th- to early 20th-century Continental European decorative arts, particularly German or Austrian production, where animal-head canes were popular as gentlemen’s accessories associated with hunting and outdoor pursuits.

Condition
Overall good condition, with surface wear, rubbing, and patina consistent with age and use. Minor losses and abrasions to the surface, particularly at high points. The amber eye appears intact. No visible cracks or structural damage. Socket shows expected wear from mounting.
