Large American Bowie knife with a broad single-edged steel blade of clipped-point form, the blade exhibiting a straight spine transitioning into a sharpened false edge toward the tip and a pronounced ricasso with cut-back shoulder. The blade is stamped on one side of the ricasso with the maker’s mark "MARKS & REES" above "CINCINNATI," applied in a shallow arched format. The knife is fitted with a simple iron crossguard of flattened oval form and a straight wood grip secured by multiple metal rivets, the grip gently waisted and flaring slightly toward the pommel. The overall form, proportions, and construction align with Bowie knives produced for civilian, hunting, and fighting use during the antebellum and immediate pre-Civil War period, with Cincinnati recognized as a significant regional center for edged-tool and cutlery production.
L: 18 1/2 in., (47 cm.)
The blade shows age patina and scattered pitting consistent with prolonged use and age. The maker’s stamp remains legible despite wear. The iron guard displays oxidation and softened edges. The wooden grip exhibits shrinkage, surface wear, and age cracks, with rivets intact and secure. No scabbard present. Overall condition consistent with an authentic mid-19th-century frontier Bowie knife.
